Today is the Winter Solstice~ it marks a turning point where after this night~ the longest of the year, the days will get longer.

So, it is a celebration of both darkness and light. It is also a time for deep inward reflection. The perfect time to cozy up with a good book and a cup of tea. A wonderful time to practice yin yoga and meditation.

Here is a simple yet powerful winter solstice ritual from Beth James ~ Barefoot’s founder

*This ritual involves you bundling up and finding the nearest forest.

In Nature this time of year we can be bathed by her profound silence. This outer silence is a powerful reminder of the inner silence that we can achieve through our mediation and yoga practice and it is CRUCIAL for our well-being.

Take yourself as deep into a forest as you can get, ideally away from the busyness of people and the city (Proud Lake is magical this time of year).¬†Allow yourself to feel the earth, don’t worry you do not have to be barefoot for this.¬†But allow your exhale breaths to ground into your feet and your feet to deeply root into mother earth. Lift your arms over your head, this will also help you to keep warm and LIFT your gaze towards the SUN! Focus now on the inhale lifting your heart and your entire energetic body towards the SUN and allow each exhale to slowly descend through your body to the earth.

Let the breath be slow and deep, constrict the back of the throat slightly and allow the breath to have sound. Let the sound and cycles of your breathing bring in deeper concert with the rhythms of mother nature.

Now notice your surroundings. Feel the COLD air fill your lungs. Feel the temperature of the air on your skin. Notice for any sounds around you. Birds? Any other animals crunching on the ground?

Tune into the silence around you. Allow your mind to move into that silence.

Stay as long as you like and continue to feel your deep wave like breathes.

See if your walk back can be a silent walking meditation. Observe deeply the quiet of your surroundings and invite your mind to become calm.

When you arrive back home, get cozy. Make a warm drink, cuddle with a soft blanket & arrive into that quiet space within yourself.

Happy Solstice!
