Barefoot & Free is proud to have Ashley Oshinsky of Higher Living Real Estate as both a teacher and sponsor for the 2019 Barefoot & Free Yoga Festival. Learn more about Ashely and her amazing journey into yoga and how she connects yoga and work.
First off let’s chat about yoga… when did you start? What brought you back initially?
I started yoga when I was a kid, about 10. My mom & my aunt were both really into yoga. I would tag along with them to Center For Yoga and it really had always been something I loved.
I took a brief break during college and started again in my early twenties. I was broke & brought a Groupon to a local studio and was instantly hooked again. I then learned that I wanted to become a yoga teacher went to training and the rest is history!
And then you decided to teach? What was that journey like?
Well…when I came back to yoga around 22 I had an urge to want to teach. It was one of the only feelings I have ever had that I was 100% sure I needed to follow. I was unsure about what I wanted to do for my career, but I 100% knew that I wanted & needed to teach yoga.
I was a BROKE college student when I decided to go to teacher training. I asked for help from friends & family members to get me there as the training was in Mexico. I had someone gift me my plane ticket and signed up for a payment plan. I was committed and I just surrendered to being unsure of how I was going to pay for it or how it was going to work out. I just knew that I was supposed to be learning how to teach yoga.
It is absolutely within my nature to be a leader. When I teach yoga, I tap into a different side of myself & I absolutely love it.
How would you describe your style?
My style in general is eclectic. I’m very much an old soul in many ways. I’m a very authentic, open and kind. I always speak my truth & it defiantly throws people off sometimes.
I am very open about my life & struggles- I’ve learned that vulnerability is one of my greatest strengths & sharing that can help others so I’m open!
My teaching style is intense, loving & strong. I love pushing people to their edge. I always have an eclectic mix of music in my playlists like hip hop, electronic, classic rock, indie and atmospheric sounds. My flows (at least in my opinion) make sense and come together nicely. I see most people in my classes laugh, dance and sweat!
Will your barefoot class be like this or what can we expect?
You can expect to have a lot of fun. We will do some breathing, some vinyasa style flows with added HIIT moves weaved into it. This class is for anyone who likes to move. I will offer low-impact options for everything so anyone can make it work! The class will be mostly led, I will guide the way for you!! At the end we will stretch out & surrender!
You are also a business woman who is in real estate! How fun and sort of different then yoga teaching! Tell us how you got into real estate?
I was pretty lost for most of my 20’s to be honest. I was in college because that is what you’re “supposed to do” I had no clue of what I wanted to do for a career. I knew I really wanted to help people in some capacity.
When I was in college I got a job as the office manager for a boutique real estate office in Royal Oak. That is when I fell in love with real estate & decided that this is the career for me. I also come from a family that has a ton of people in the industry so I grew up learning all about real estate.
I learned over the years that I can help people A LOT with real estate. I’ve actually done a lot of personal healing with my own real estate journey too. You see, I lost my childhood home to foreclosure during the recession, it was hard to see that happen. When my husband & I were able to buy a home of our own it was extremely healing for me to having a home of my own again. I help others do the same & it is very rewarding.
What are the similar qualities you need for yoga teaching & estate work?
Teaching yoga & selling real estate have a lot more in common than you may think. Both experiences bring people to their edge and foster healing & empowerment.
We know you are here locally serving all over metro- Detroit. How can our readers find you?

And tell us what’s your dream house look like?
Currently, I’m living in my dream home. The house we live in right now is the same layout of my grandmother’s home. Her home has been the only home that’s been consistent in my entire 30 years of life. When we walked into our now house it immediately had the feeling of home that I had been missing for some time.
Sometimes home is a place & sometimes it is a feeling. Right now, I have both!
